ON THE SIDE OF LIFE: A reflection on hope, kindness, and the power of connection

In 2000, while receiving chemotherapy for advanced lymphoma, I wandered into a small shop in Sedona, Arizona. It sold handmade items crafted by local residents. That’s where I found her—a simple stained glass angel. Primitive in style, suspended by an invisible thread, she stirred something deep in me the moment I saw her.

I hung her outside our bedroom window, where she danced in the wind through all kinds of weather. I spent many days in bed, watching her sway. Sometimes, it seemed she might blow away. But she held on. So did I.

She became a symbol of hope, protection, courage, and quiet beauty. I still treasure her—and the hands that made her. That artisan never knew how much their creation would mean to someone. But it did.

Small Acts, Big Ripples

We matter more than we realize. Our small acts—a kind word, a handmade gift, a gesture of help—can heal and uplift.

Just today, my friend Marsha shared a story. Her washing machine broke, so she went to a laundromat for the first time in decades. A young woman kindly helped her navigate the machines. In return, Marsha brought her a bottle of soda. A simple exchange. But it mattered.

These moments may seem small, but they strengthen us. They remind us that we’re not alone—and that we’re more powerful and influential than we think.

🍽️ The Long Spoon Story

There’s an old parable about heaven and hell. In both places, people are given long-handled spoons—too long to feed themselves. In hell, no one helps anyone, and all go hungry. In heaven, they feed one another, and all thrive.

Life is like this. We can bring a little bit of heaven to Earth every day. Or we can create hell.

🌍 Choosing the Friendly Universe

Einstein once said it matters whether we believe the universe is friendly. I choose to believe life is on our side. The question is: Are we on the side of life?

Let’s feed one another. Let’s choose to make things better.
